MINDSET, STEP 6

Think beyond food.
Making a two-week commitment to changing your relationship with food is a big thing, but it doesn’t have to be the only thing. This chapter is about mindset, and if you want to reset how you think about health and your lifestyle, expand your boundaries to take a more holistic view.
Food can fight inflammation. That much we know. But food ties into our entire lifestyle, and it turns out that other critical areas of our day-to-day life also can relieve—or cause—inflammation, depending on our approach. If you’re fighting inflammation with food, you can use three more major weapons against inflammation at the same time: exercise, sleep, and stress management. The math is pretty simple here (aside from four weapons are better than one): If you get poor sleep, don’t exercise, and are always stressed out, you’re inflammation levels will no doubt be higher. If you’re physically active, respect sleep, and manage your stress levels, your inflammation will most likely be lower. For all the details on how and why this works, see the special three-part section at the end of the book. All of these things tie together and can complement one another.
But it’s even bigger than that, especially when you consider your mindset and how you approach lifestyle. If you’re able to follow this eating plan for two weeks and have positive results, you’ll look better, feel better—all the things you’d expect. You’ll be like, I did it! It would be easy for someone to say, “Hey, that’s great but if you really want to live right, you should be exercising and sleeping better and reducing your stress load.” Mostly because it’s easy for people to say such things without thinking about what it takes to pull off. But in this case, sleep, stress, and exercise all have positive or negative effects on inflammation, depending on which way you go. If you set your mind to work on all four aspects—legs on a table, so to speak—your whole mindset can change. You’ll see what’s possible. Better still, you’ll see what’s possible for you. You can go from I can do this to I will do this to I did this, and it won’t be about just food, but your entire way of living. That’s powerful. One good change feeds more good changes. For two weeks, you can commit to one thing—eating—and that’s fine. Or you can commit to one big thing—a holistic lifestyle that can change your health.
Imagine how good achieving that will feel every day as you go. All you have to do is set your mind to it.
